Volunteers are an essential part of the hospice team which recognizes that dying is not simply a medical event but a deeply personal one.
Volunteers fill a variety of important roles working in the community, in the Hospicare Residence and/or directly with patients and families.

Patient Care Volunteers

Upon completion of a 20 hour training program, patient care volunteers serve in homes, nursing homes, the hospital and the Hospicare Residence. They provide companionship, run errands, help with cooking, read aloud, write letters, offer caregivers a chance to get out, and perform many other tasks to ease the lives of both patients and their family members.

Personal History Volunteers

Personal history volunteers receive additional training to interview and record patients who wish to leave a legacy for family members. The patient decides the content of the recordings which may include a chronological history, reading aloud a special passage or story or leaving a special message for individuals; just to name a few.

Massage Therapist Volunteers

These volunteers are professional, licensed, insured massage therapists offering massage to patients and their caregivers.

Bereavement Support Volunteers

These volunteers offer support to bereaved persons by providing a listening ear to Hospice families; making phone calls and or visits to families during the 13-month period following the death of a hospice patient; helping to prepare for and/or co-facilitate support groups/workshops and assisting with Hospicare’s Memorial Service and annual Good Grief Day.

Aministrative Volunteers

Office volunteers assist with mailings, shredding papers, and photocopying documents among other administrative tasks.

Landscape Volunteers

Landscape volunteers help in the gardens planting, weeding, watering, and pruning.

Special Event Volunteers

Volunteers assist with events such as Light the Landscape, Illuminations and Women Swimmin’.

Musicians

Volunteer musicians work through Hospicare’s Music Program to provide comfort, emotional nourishment or simply enjoyment and pleasure to patients and caregivers.

Outreach Volunteers

Outreach volunteers assist in providing information and education about Hospicare’s services, serious illness, dying and bereavement to the entire community. Volunteers may distribute flyers, posters and/or staff tables at health fairs and other events; plan outreach efforts; or speak at community gatherings.

Bakers

Provide cookies and cakes for special events at the Hospicare Center or at other agency-sponsored events such as the annual memorial service.
