The Hospicare Center sits atop South Hill in Ithaca on more than eleven acres featuring extensive gardens, pond and panoramic views of the countryside.

A portion houses the Hospicare Residence, the first certified hospice residence in New York State.

Although most of our patients are cared for at home, the Hospicare Residence offers accommodations for recipients of hospice services:

  • whose caregivers are no longer able to care for them, or who must be out of the home for long periods
  • who live alone without adequate support or the availability of a suitable caregiver
  • who no longer have a home in which to live

Patient comfort is the most significant goal of the Residence staff, and the hospice medical director is available for consultation if the patient's physician is unable to visit. With two staff members attending no more than six patients 24 hours a day, personal care and attention are assured.

There are no restrictions on visiting hours, and family members may remain overnight if they wish. Meals are prepared on site, and efforts are made to accommodate individual preferences. Residents are invited to bring in paintings, a favorite chair, or other possessions to make their room feel like home.

Admission to the Residence will be made only when we are able to meet the patient's needs.

Residence fees are usually private pay, though some insurance companies provide coverage. Medicaid will cover those who are eligible, and a sliding scale can be worked out to address individual needs. No one will be denied care in the Residence because of lack of funds.

Cornell Companions

Our canine friends from the Cornell Veterinary School make regular visits to the residence. Click here to learn more about this program.

The Intergenerational Nature Study Program

Using the extensive gardens and pond at the Hospicare Center as a laboratory, children of all ages learn about nature and the cycle of all living things. They plant and nurture seedlings, create art using natural material, and listen to stories and music. They also visit Residence patients who may be unable to leave their rooms. The children bring vitality, energy and joy to the Hospicare Center. They take away with them a greater level of comfort with people who are frail and elderly, and a growing understanding of the process of life closure.
