Music, Massage, Gardens
We take an interdisciplinary, comprehensive approach with each patient that includes complementary therapies and respects the role of the arts and nature in healing.
Music
Many cultures over time have used music at the bedside to help alleviate emotional, spiritual, psychological and physical suffering.
Hospicare and Palliative Care Services initiated a grant-funded music program in January 2006 coordinated by Jayne Demakos, a professional pianist and harpist.
Working with local musicians who donate their talents, Jayne seeks to develop ways in which music can address the many needs of hospice patients. Read more.
Massage
Volunteer massage therapists offer massages to both patients and caregivers. They are licensed massage therapists who volunteer both their time and skills in providing comfort, stress release and help in symptom management.
Gardens and joyful gardeners
Hospicare has beautiful gardens which are wheelchair accessible. Using the extensive gardens and pond at the Hospicare Center as a laboratory, children of all ages learn about nature and the cycle of all living things.
They plant and nurture seedlings, create art using natural material, and listen to stories and music. They also visit patients in the residence who may be unable to leave their rooms. The children bring vitality, energy, and joy to the Hospicare Center.
Patients and their families are also welcome to walk around the gardens and along the edge of the pond, catching glimpses of a blue heron wading or turtles slipping off a log.
