Massage Therapy Program
As part of our volunteer program, licensed massage therapists visit patients to provide gentle massage and therapeutic touch.
How massage works in a hospice setting
The massage therapists adjust their approach to the needs of the patient. Rarely is this a traditional massage on a table, but can include light massage and gentle touch of the head, hands, and feet. Patients remain clothed and often stay in bed or in a chair.
Benefits of massage
Massage therapy can relieve pain and tension. Massage can help patients sleep and improve functioning in body systems, such as helping to relieve constipation or reduce edema. It can also promote calmness and can relieve anxiety. The goal is to help patients feel relaxed and peaceful.
I am 92 years old and have difficulty in walking due to problems with my knees. Not only has [massage therapist Stephanie Rothe] helped with my knees, but she has given me relief with back and shoulder pain as well. Stephanie not only helps to relieve my pain, but her therapy is relaxing and helps to relax my body and mind. Thank you for this marvelous service provided by hospice.”

Patients with cancer
While massage used to be discouraged for people with cancer – and deep tissue work is often ruled out - gentle massage can relieve aches and pains. Studies have shown cancer patients receiving massage also show improved immune function, increased range of motion, and reduced reports of depression and anxiety. Massage therapists are sensitive to what is contraindicated in a particular hospice patient, whatever the illness or condition involved.
Meaningful work
Being allowed into someone’s life at a crucial moment is a gift. In a totally uncomplicated way, touch is something that cuts through a whole lot."
